Family Traditions

Aren't family traditions great? Well, the good ones I mean. 4th of July activities, singing Happy Birthday to Christ at Christmas (sounds sacrilegious, but it's not, i swear), Mom's green slime jello at Thanksgiving, fire, guns, jamming out to Led Zeppelin, Camp Loll, Zion National Park...we have some great ones.

But the best one by far is CARS. We are a car family. And every year we manage to get to a couple car shows and at least one Nitro Night at Rocky Mountain Raceways. These things were packed into one auto-filled day yesterday.

We went to a Back To The 50's car show in our little town and then went to Nitro Night last night.

If you don't appreciate the beauty and glamor of vintage cars this next part might bore you. But if you do appreciate, sit back, relax and enjoy. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.

I mostly look at the exterior but Dad covets the engines.

El Camino. Business in the front, party in the back. Ha! I crack myself up.

This one belongs to a friend of my friend Brittany. So i like to say that i have a connection.

EJ's favorite. It's pink.

Another EJ favorite. It's purple.

It is a gorgeous car. Just perfect.

And i love the sign.

This was one of my favorites of the day.

I've got a thing for suicide doors.

This is actually where EJ and I ended up after about six cars. We think she'll grow out of it and start paying more attention to the cars soon...

This dog was the happiest thing there that day.

Now onto Nitro Night. Many of the same cars were there...with very different engines and fuel in them.

Sorry, let me explain Nitro Night. It's drag racing but with insane engines and top fuel. The top nitro car for the night did the quarter mile in 4:11. It was amazing. It's so loud that you have to wear earplugs and it still hurts a bit. The ground shakes when they pass and you can feel the heat from the engines up in the stands. Can you tell i like it?

The evening started with the regular ole dragsters. Very cool but just you wait for the nitro cars.

They also raced some sweet bikes that just screamed.

Then some louder, faster cars came in.

They wrapped up the regular drag section with the coolest firetruck ever. It did wheelies and shot flame out the back.

This video is pretty cool. Remember that it's on my phone.

Then the sun went down.

And the fun started.

Turns out it's hard to photograph nitro cars. They go fast.

You have to wear earplugs and most of the little kids had huge earphones on. This little girl was so funny and just loved being there with her grandpa.

Here is another video of the nitro cars. Sorry it's pretty bouncy. I'm hoping you can get some idea of the sound. This video actually killed the speaker on my phone. Turn up your speakers!

They ended the show with a Jet Semi. Yup you heard me. A semi with a jet engine. Flame was Shooting out of the engine so big that people were running. And the sound. Holy cow. It was intense. My sound died so i couldn't record it but I've attached a video that is exactly like the one we watched. It's crazy wicked. i'm not sure what the popping is about but it sounds cool!

Does this make me sound like a total redneck? I'm really not, this ia really fun thing to go see. BUT...tomorrow i will show you all the pics i took of actual rednecks. Be excited. Be very excited.

A few days late...

EEK! It's been way too long since i've posted. Sorry about that kids (I know you are all really torn up about it).

This one is for my poppa. I love you so much. Thank you for being the best dad and friend i could ever ask for.

As you all know it was Father's Day on Sunday and it was such a great day. The whole fam-dam-ly came up and it was loud and crazy and fantastic.

We have a hard time taking family pics around here...but this is my dad with all of his kids.

Poppa and his babies. It was going so well.

And then the inevitable breakdown.

I wonder if they are traumatized by the fact that we laugh at them when they cry?

At the parents house we spend a lot of time on the deck taking in the mountain splendor.

And feeding the friendly neighborhood potguts. Emmy named this one Treelamp. He loves watermelon.

The boys grilled up big juicy steaks, hand-stuffed brats, and trout (that Caleb supposedly caught). Yummy!

Aren't trout pretty? I think so.

My mom made dad his favorite...

Raspberry, Rhubarb Pie. It was wonderful.

And this is the un-holy mess that i sadly left behind for Mom to clean up. Sorry!

And this finaly shot is of Levi doing what he does best. Entertaining the ankle-biters (with my iPhone).

He is going to be an amazing father someday.

Love you Dad!!

The meaning of life...

Brittany sent this to me. Totally cracked me up. And so true. Do you agree?

The first day, God created the dog and said: 'Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.' The dog said: 'That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?' So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said: 'Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span.' The monkey said: 'Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?' And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said: 'You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.' The cow said: 'That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?' And God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created man and said: 'Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years.'

But man said: 'Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?'

'Okay,' said God, 'You asked for it.'

So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

(As an aside...I love Clint Eastwood.)

Life has now been explained to you.

Girls Night Out

This past weekend was spent living it up Main Street style. A bunch of girls from my church all met up for a fun-filled night on the town. We stayed the night in a very cool hotel on Main.

We had pizza, and obviously over-ordered.

But finally more girls showed up and we managed to finish it off.

We went hot-tubbin'

Chitted the Chat

And did some girlie nail-painting and foot massaging.

Not super sure why Wendy is kneeling...

We were up until almost 4:30 in the morning and i really can't believe that i used to stay up that late all the time in college. It was painful the next couple of days trying to recoup from that.

When we all got up Natalie made us breakfast.

And we enjoyed it while watching Enchanted, pretty much an amazing movie.

As it turns out it was the 125th anniversary of our little town and they had a parade. We got tired of watching out the window of the hotel and heading down to the street to join in the fun.

These darling little guys were moose, we have A LOT of them around here.

This cute dog thought she was a lamb.

St. Mary's was there, their priest is such a nice man. Good people.

There were a lot pioneer types walking around. A nod to our heritage.

But this is the only shot i got. Sorry.

Oh! there was this little pioneer/cowgirl, she was tired from all the parading.

We for sure didn't get enough sleep.

The parting shot. Caroline was in a little off-main street play called Rapunzel. It was great. Really top notch. Applause, applause. Encore please.

I am very grateful for great friends and great times. Life is Good!!
